WPF Therapy Services
Some people contact us looking for a particular service or approach. Others simply know that they need some help. When you contact WPF Therapy you will first be offered an initial consultation at which an experienced therapist will explore with you your needs and expectations and whether the services we offer could help you.

Following this we may be able to recommend one of the following:

• One-to-one ongoing counselling or psychotherapy

Psychodynamic counselling or psychodynamic psychotherapy at WPF Therapy is a once-weekly one-to-one ongoing therapy, with each session lasting 50 minutes at WPF Therapy's central London consulting rooms.

The regular sessions provide an opportunity to explore recurring patterns of behaviour and relationships which may also be repeated in the consulting room. The counsellor or therapist will work with the client to look at these without fear of judgement, rejection or retaliation.

The psychodynamic approach at WPF Therapy recognises that problems and distress in the present may have originated in early life experiences and that understanding this is the first step towards achieving changes in perception, awareness and relationships.

Counselling and psychotherapy provides a safe place in which to explore past and present feelings and the meaning of past and current relationships. It can be particularly helpful for people experiencing problems with low self-esteem, relationships, anxiety or depression.

Payment structure
The payment structure is on a sliding scale depending on income with a minimum session payment of £20 (£25 before 9am, from 6pm and on Saturdays). There is a one-off registration charge of £25 and an initial in-depth consultation with a minimum payment of £40. You will be expected to pay for missed or cancelled sessions, except for those cancelled by the counsellor.

• Focussed or short-term counselling

Short-term or time-limited psychodynamic counselling is a focussed therapy taking place over up to 12 sessions

With your counsellor you will initially agree a specific goal to work towards with subsequent weekly one-to-one sessions each lasting for 50 minutes.

The sessions provide an opportunity to explore your problem in depth with the counsellor in a non-judgemental way, gain a better self-understanding and work to bring about a desired change.

Focussed therapy can be particularly helpful when experiencing problems such as:

  • Inability to manage under pressure
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Poor performance at work
  • Traumatic incidents
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Bereavement
  • Redundancy
Payment structure
Payment is on a sliding scale depending on income. The minimum payment is £30 for daytime appointments and £60 for sessions before 9am and after 6pm. There is a one-off registration charge of £25 and an initial in-depth consultation with a minimum payment of £40. You will be expected to pay for missed or cancelled sessions, except for those cancelled by the counsellor.

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) at WPF Therapy is a short-term therapy - between 6-12 weekly sessions - for those experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and depression.

Working together with a CBT practitioner you will identify thinking patterns which may be contributing to emotional distress and troubling behaviour.

You are then helped to develop new ways of thinking which can have a positive effect on your mood and behaviour.

CBT has been found to be helpful for issues such as:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • exams - studying
  • health anxiety
  • lack of assertiveness
  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • procrastination
  • stress
  • work issues - e.g. role change, new job, redundancy, retirement, promotion

For CBT to be successful you will need to be:

  • motivated to work with CBT
  • interested in finding 'tools' to correct something
  • willing to do 'homework' - such as a thought diary - between sessions.

• Group therapy (including a specialist group for gay men)

At group therapy sessions up to eight members of a group meet weekly for 90 minutes together with a trained group conductor or facilitator.

Sessions have no fixed agenda and members are encouraged to raise any concerns or issues on their mind.

Group therapy helps people to explore how they relate to others within the group and how these relationships mirror those in the outside world.

It can be particularly helpful in understanding recurring patterns of behaviour and relationships.

Some people find support and encouragement in talking with others who are tackling, and making progress with, similar problems. Group therapy sessions can also be helpful after an initial period of one-to-one counselling.

As group therapy is a long-term approach clients are asked to make a commitment to attending sessions for at least a year and to maintain mutual confidentiality so whatever is discussed in the group stays within the group.

Gay Men's Therapy Group
A sepcialist group for gay men operates weekly on a Wednesday evening from 6:10-7:40pm.

Payment structure
Payment is on a sliding scale depending on income and paid monthly in arrears. The minimum payment is £20 per session. There is a one-off registration charge of £25 and the minimum charge for the initial in-depth consultation is £40. You will be expected to pay for missed or cancelled sessions, except for those cancelled by the counsellor.
